AOL Number 3

So after my little panic last week of feeling like I have no time to research/write, I have worked out my timetable and sorted the times that I need to put pen to paper and my head into books and be super productive!

This week I have mainly been focusing on one of my last two AOL Essays. I had already had a rough plan put together from last term (very grateful for past me right now!!), so it was just a case of adding in some more theory and making sure I relate this to my practice and say how I feel about it. 1545 words down and I have a full draft, I feel like I'm in a good place with it which is good. This AOL is centred around 'teaching to support children's mental and physical needs' - this led to a lot of research about motivational climates within the classroom and creating a positive learning environments. What I found interesting is deciphering what motivational climates I use, and what this means for my teaching. Looking at the theory I use a 'performance orientated climate' which isn't necessary always positive as it can cause pressure to my students, particularly those at vocational exam level. So I have then reflected on how I can use this motivational climate along with other theory such as, goal setting and ensuring that each student is viewed as an individual rather than classes as a whole to then get the best out of them (learning and teaching styles), hopefully resulting in a positive learning environment.

Onto a little bit more research for Module Two and ethics now! (I'm hoping ethics hasn't changed too much since my dissertation 3 years ago).

  1. Hello Ellie, congrats. I know the feeling about finding time, when and how to be productive. I can't just whip out a book and absorb if a spare 10 minutes happens to come my way, perhaps one gets better at this? I also appreciate the 'past me' reference :)

Your AOL sounds quite poignant while working through Covid, I'm wondering if this has swayed your findings from the norm and if you included this? I think this will sway my Module 1 essay so am interested if this is true?

    1. Hi Lorraine! Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, I've been truly MIA!!
I have found throughout the process so far that as long as you have a notebook or highlighter to hand 10 minutes of quick reading is better than nothing at all.

I haven't mentioned Covid because it wasn't in my timeline of reflection. But it definitely would have fit in, I think all us practitioners have been effected throughout Covid, so if it fits your module 1 I would definitely include it. Covid is coming in more for me within module two and has definitely swayed what and how I am going to investigate in module three. I hope you're having a good spring break :)
