Knowledge, information and learning - What do I think about this?

Over the past (and my first) 10 weeks of the MAPP DTP course I realise that I think a lot about what I do and how this helps my teaching and proving that what I learn gets put into practice. But, after speaking to Adesola about my DAN4510 essay draft this morning, I have realised that I need to focus on what I think about certain topics and what I have learnt from this. Thinking about knowledge, information and learning is where I have decided to begin.

What is knowledge? - the information, understanding and skills that you gain through education and experience. Knowledge is valuable, and to 'know' means to have some special form of competence. Another meaning of 'knowing' can be recognising something as true.

What is information? - facts or details about somebody/something. Information is said to be categorised as, Information-as-knowledge, information-as-process and information-as-thing. I find that information is acquired without us even acknowledging it. Information is constantly being fed to us, therefore, I feel there is a process to subconsciously processing this information, for knowledge or just to discard it fully.

What is learning? - the process of learning something. I feel learning can be viewed as either being active or passive. The information we receive, is either learnt by actively seeking out this information, or it is information that we come across through active learning, but the information is taken in in a passive form.

I feel like these three 'words' can be used as a cycle, we need information, that is then learnt which in turn, becomes knowledge. I find thinking about how we aren't born with knowledge, shows that we have to go through a process to acquire it, therefore, I think we pass through life passively learning information, and it's only when we are interested that we find ourselves actively learning information. Either way, through both senses of learning, this becomes a form of knowledge that we then draw on in both our day-to-day and academic lives.
