Communication - Interpersonal vs. Intrapersonal

My research has led me to think about the communication I have had with myself and others to generate ideas, for both teaching and thinking about my professional practice and lifelong learning. I have discovered that I use both interpersonal and intrapersonal forms of communication.

Interpersonal Communication - is an exchange of information between two or more people.  From looking back at module 1, I have found that this type of communication has come from blogging and MAPP discussion groups. This exchange of information has allowed me to them express thoughts that have come to light from this. Thinking about the idea the "vision is the art of seeing things invisible" (Swift), the use of the blog, especially has allowed me to convey thought processes and make them visible by being words on a screen. "When we search for words to capture and communicate our experiences, we discover what language is the medium through which we clarify and express our uniqueness" (Carr, 2001: Pg.19)

Intrapersonal Communication - Can be defined as, communication with one's self, which may include self-talk, acts of imagination and visualisation, and even recall and memory. I have discovered that I conduct a lot of intrapersonal communication when I do yoga, I find that when I hold poses, and therefore focus on my breathing, this is a time that I conduct a communication thread with myself, and generate ideas for both personal and professional growth.

DAN4510 essay, has really got me thinking about how much I have learnt about myself as a learner over the past few weeks. I'm finding that typing my thoughts and ideas out is taking my research further and letting me think about things I had not considered before.

  1. Thank you Ellie. This is useful information at this point in time. I find I struggle swapping between the two. Teaching for a day, working/bantering with people and then coming home to study, reaching into my own mind for direction/reasoning (or vice versa). I am hoping this becomes easier with time.

    1. Hi Lorraine. You're very welcome, I'm pleased you have found this information useful and hope it's also given you some food for thought! I have found that the more you think about it, the more second nature it becomes to acknowledge it. It definitely becomes easier with time. Good luck with your studies this term, I found module one an eye opener to things I didn't realise I was doing as second nature.
