Sunday 27/09/20 Skype Discussion (Knowledge, information and learning)
This was the first Sunday Skype discussion that I had attended, being new this term, to the MAPP community. I found it very informative and fascinating listening to everyone's different ideas and perspectives surrounding the topic of 'knowledge information and learning'. It was discussed that we pass through each step to lead to another, we dissect information, absorb knowledge and embody learning.
Knowledge, information and learning can all come hand in hand, however, they can also be treated as individual factors. It was discussed, that knowledge is not necessarily about the outcome, rather the journey we pass to acquire it. From this, as a group we briefly touched on the philosophical aspects and the nature and theories of learning, a topic which I personally find fascinating. For me, the methods and theories of learning are how we acquire knowledge in a dance setting. The VARK learning styles (visual auditory, read/write and kinaesthetic), when used appropriately and effectively, alongside teaching methods such as Gibbons Teaching Styles, can bring a wealth of information and knowledge to a student. I am interested to discover further depth into teaching and learning styles regarding knowledge, information and learning. Additionally, the nature of learning and and creating a successful learning environment.
Information, is readily available and is used as a way to learn and thus gain knowledge needed for a particular subject field. In terms of dance, information and movement material has become more accessible through the likes of the internet and most specifically, applications such as, TikTok and Instagram. As dance educators it is important to highlight to students the benefits and also the negative affects of using and viewing dance in this way. Particularly in terms of child safety and wellbeing. Dance as live performance vs recorded performance was also a topic of conversation that lead to ethics surrounding filming, a topic which is fairly new to me. I have only ever previously touched on ethics when writing my BA dissertation, therefore it is a topic that I am very interested in studying and looking into further.
